Mesopotamian society

There were large differences into Mesopotamian society. The king was on the top of the society.
Privileged groups had most of the lands , wealth and power. There were several privileged groups:

  1. Aristocracy was formed by the king´s family and the nobility . They owned most lands and the government positions.
  2. Priests controlled most lands . They lived in temples and could govern the cities  especially in Sumer.
  3. Civil servants ( scribes, warriors, architects,  tax collectors...) Scribes actually were the most important civil servants. They came from important families and were the only people who could write, read and count.

Most people belonged to underprivileged people in Mesopotamia :

  1. Peasant rented lands to the nobility, the priests or the King.
  2. Craftmen had different jobs as blacksmiths, weavers, carpenters, potters or jewellers.

There were groups without rights into Mesopotamian society

  1. Women were men´s property
  2. Slaves were considered as things not as people.


Mesopotamian cities

Mesopotamian cities were surrounded by high walls made out of adobe. The main buildings were the temple, called ziggurat, and the palace .

There were different areas depending on the wealth of the people or their jobs.
The market was the most important place  of the city in order to make economic activities.
