Mesopotamian culture
Mesopotamians gave several contributions to Humanity :
The most important invention of mesopotamians was writing. They invented the first writing of the History: cuneiform writing. It was wedge-shaped for this reason it has that name of cuneiform ( remember if comes from latin word “cuneus” = wedge) .
First schools were born in Mesopotamia. Firstly they only formed scribes but rich people could learn Science, Religion, Astronomy or Maths.
Other important Mesopotamian contributions were:
- The numbers and Arithmetic and Geometry were developed .
- First calendar was made by Mesopotamians.
- They used the sexagesimal system to measure time
- They were the first astrologer and astronomer
- They created the first laws . Hammurabi , king of Babylon, wrote the first legal text of the History called Code of Hammurab
Mesopotamian art
Mesopotamians developed great architectonic and sculptural works.
Architecture.
They used brick and adobe ( mud brick) for constructions and they used the arch and the vault too.
Several monument buildings were constructed :
- Isthar Gate in Babylon . It was decorated with blue tiles.
- Large temples called ziggurats. The most famous ziggurats were in Ur and Babylon
- Khorsabad palace in Assyria.
Sculpture
They made stone statues of kings, gods and mithological animals. Reliefs of war and hunting scenes were carved on walls
