Task 2 Roman cities

Cities were the centre of life in the Roman Empire. Most of the buildings and economical and political activities were in the cities The Roman founded a lot of new cities around the Mediterranean sea. Rome was the most important city of the empire.

Urban design of Roman cities follows clear laws for the development of public and military services. The city is a rectangular design surrounded by a wall with watchtowers. All the streets are equal except for two: the North-South one -Kardo maximus- and the East-West one -Decumanus maximus-. Both are wider and end at the four doors of the exterior wall.

Roman city

At the cross of both streets was the Forum. It was the centre of the political, social and cultural life of the city. It had a portico decorated with sculptures of the emperors and their relatives . The most important buildings of the city like government buildings , temples dedicated to Emperor worship or the main gods and the basilica were there . Markets and shops were located around the forum too.
Roman cities had all kinds of facilities like baths, show buildings ( theatres, amphitheatres, circus ), bridges..
